Resurrection House – 8.24.09
Scot DiStefano has been commissioned to design a new residence in the Croissant Park neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale. The property was significantly damaged by fire in January of 2009. Of particular task is bridging the psychological barrier of demolishing a cherished home, designing something new and simultaneously retaining the charm and character of the original home.
Found throughout the property is an air plant commonly referred to as the Resurrection Fern. The Resurrection Fern gets its name because it can survive long periods of drought by curling up and appearing dead. With the presence of moisture, the fern will uncurl, reopen and turn from brown to green, appearing to resurrect. Portions of the original structure will be retained while creating a the new home. Hence, it seemed appropriate both literally and metaphorically, to name it as such.
