The WAAV
The WAAV is a marriage of three influences. It is an homage to the Wave Trolley Project once slated for Downtown Fort Lauderdale. When the project was terminated, the site was sold to the Housing Authority where a significant affordable housing project was built. Located along the East Coast Railroad and adjacent to some abandoned spurs, aesthetic inspiration and meaning were found. The piece is also a nod to the beautiful waves of Fort Lauderdale Beach and a gesture to the seemingly lost tradition of waving to the passengers on passing trains.
Originally intended to be a freestanding piece along the property line adjacent to the railroad spurs, the study models made it clear that the piece wanted to be adjacent to the building and part of the entry sequence. This found opportunity allows residents to experience the work from a distance as they approach the entry, while transiting to and from the building, and as a shaded seating area.
